East Millsboro Elementary School
In Delaware, only schools that show improvement in the percentage of students meeting state standards are eligible to be nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Award. That means East Millsboro may never get such an award, because it has no room for improvement in that category – just about all its kids meet state standards.
But that’s not the half of it. East Millsboro’s poor students (about half the school’s students meet the standards for free and reduced-price meals) outperform the rest of Delaware and – bucking national trends – its boys perform as well or better than its girls.
Long-time principal, Gary Brittingham, attributes the success of his school to the “creative use of staff, time, and materials.”
